What Happens in Elko Stays in Elko
There is a lot of nothing in Nevada. After Reno, there is mile after mile of scrub desert. Even Verizon forsakes this area.
But it does offer a certain grandeur.
The train is running quite a bit early so far. Amtrak is risking its reputation.
Winnemucca has not a lot of charm. I did notice that Amtrak managed to spell it "Winnemuca" on at least a few of the station signs.
Overnight we will enter Utah. Because of trackwork in Colorado, we are diverting through Wyoming. This is #50 of 50 states for me. Not supposed to be quite as scenic as Colorado, but we will conquer Sherman Hill, the highest point on the original transcontinental railroad. Appropriate for my transcontinental adventure.
I did figure out that being at the end of the train, I could get photographs out of the back. Here's a sunset over the high desert.
Halfway through another bottle of Oregon Pinot Noir, I am soon to join the desert.
