Here are some free tools I've developed to help in the track planning process.  Feel free to download and use for non-commercial purposes.

 

Bob's Curve and Grade Calculator.

 

This is a MS Excel spreadsheet that allows you to enter radius, degrees, and grade and find out how long a curve is and how much of a rise there will be at a particular grade percentage.  For helixes, enter 360°.

 

Bob's Train Length Calculator.

 

This is a MS Excel spreadsheet that allows you to calculate the length of a train based on number of cars in N, HO, S, or O scale, or to find out how many cars will fit in a given track length.
