MY GOING PRICE FOR CUSTOM TRACK PLANNING SERVICES IS...
ONE BEER.
LET ME DESIGN YOUR RAILROAD.
One of my favorite parts of the hobby is track planning. I've managed to place several articles in the model press based upon my designs.
In addition, I've been privileged to design railroads for several friends and acquaintances. Each design has been well worth my price of one beer.
GIVENS AND DRUTHERS FOR THE 21st CENTURY.
If John Armstrong was "the dean of track planners" I would like to be his graduate assistant. I am a devotee of the kind of operations-based, scenically "sincere" linear walk-in designs that John pioneered.
At the same time, I have incorporated some more current trends and ideas, including wider aisles and the use of layout design elements (LDE's).
I've adapted John's "Givens and Druthers" questionnaire, and ask my clients to complete one before design begins.
TOOLS AND TIPS
I have stuck with a simplified CAD program called MacDraft for track planning because I am used to it. Although it does not have some of the bells and whistles promised by the track planing packages that have become available – such as 3D renderings and the ability to "operate" – I have found it quite adequate for my purposes. I will proudly note that the art department at Model Railroader has been able to accept my files and use them with only minor modifications in my recent printed articles.

I HAVE A DAY JOB, BUT...
I do like to take on several track planning projects per year. Contact me if you need a track plan, and I'll be happy to consider taking it on.
